Nepalese air passengers have won their fight against a recent hike in airfares after the Government of Nepal rescinded its decision to increase airfares for remote sectors. At the recommendation of the Civil Aviation Authority of Nepal (CAAN), the Ministry of Tourism and Civil Aviation (MoTCA) had on 2 February approved a revised airfare that came into effect from 13 February. The people of Karnali and other remote districts had been protesting against the airfare hike and obstructing air services for the last three weeks after the airline operators increased the fare by 30%. Minister of Tourism and Civil Aviation Khadga Bahadur Bishwakarma said that all the stakeholders, including private airlines, agreed to switch back to the old airfare. Joint Secretary of the Ministry of Tourism and Civil Aviation Ranjan Krishna Aryal said that government is committed to give continuity to the decision. “We are hopeful that private sector will consider it as its responsibility,” Aryal said.A committee has been formed under the coordination of Aryal to study the airfare structure and make recommendations to the government. The committee will submit its report to the Ministry within 15 days.
