Nepal tourism arrivals rise in April

The number of foreign tourists who visited Nepal in April 2010 by air increased by 2.3% to 38,694 as compared to the same month last year, according to the Nepal Tourism Board (NTB).
The arrivals from the South Asian region, except for the arrivals from India and Sri Lanka, increased by 4.9% with Bangladesh (71.2%) and Pakistan (35.1%). But the number of tourists coming from India declined by 2.6 per cent last month. India has been the largest source market for Nepal.
Visitor arrivals from Sri Lanka also went down by 21.5%. But in totality, arrivals from the South Asian Region increased by 15.9% during the first four months of 2010 compared to the same period last year.
Arrivals from China went up by 45.3%. This is one of the fastest growing tourist markets for Nepal.
Similarly, arrivals from Asia (other than South Asia) maintained the upward trend. Visitor arrivals from Malaysia and South Korea registered a positive growth of 14.2%, and 20.3% respectively. In aggregate, visitor arrivals during the first four months of 2010 from Asia (other than South Asia) grew by 32.4 per cent as compared to the same period of 2009.
In April, arrivals from the United States of America and Canada increased by 3% and 8.3% respectively. But Australia and New Zealand recorded a negative growth of 15% and 9.3% respectively.
Arrivals from the European markets declined by 5.5% with major destinations showing mixed reaction. Arrivals from Belgium, Czech Republic, France, Italy, Poland and Russia shot up by 5.7%, 61.4%, 4%, 15.5%, 67.2% and 11.6% respectively.
But other destinations in the Western Europe posted weaker arrivals figures.
Arrivals from the UK, Germany, and The Netherlands declined by 15.1%, 3.9%, and 11.2% respectively.
April was the eleventh consecutive month that Nepal saw growth in international tourist arrivals. This shows the improved prospects for Nepal in 2010 with rising business and consumer confidence.
During the first four months of 2010, tourist arrivals increased by 21% in comparison to the same period last year.
A total of 49,096 foreign tourists departed from the Tribhuvan International Airport (TIA) in April 2010. The Nepalese arrival was 50,672 while 66,757 Nepalese departed from the TIA during the same month.
