A new international airport will be developed close to Vietnam’s Halong Bay, according to local media reports.
The Dau Tu news site this week cited authorities in Quang Ninh province as saying that the project has now been approved, following a meeting with Vietnam’s Ministry of Transport.
The new airport is expected to be developed on Van Do Island, about 50km from the UNESCO World Heritage site. Covering an area of 290 hectares, it will feature a terminal building and single runway, and will initially be able to handle two million passengers a year. But this could expand to five million passengers in a later phase of development.
The development is expected to cost VND7.5 trillion (US$332 million).
At present, travellers wanting to visit Halong Bay usually fly into Hanoi’s Noi Ba International Airport before taking a three- to four-hour overland trip to the famous bay.
