Officials from Cambodia and Laos have agreed to open two new international checkpoints along their common border, paving the way for increased cross-border tourism and trade. The Phnom Penh Post has reported that new checkpoints in Cambodia’s Strung Treng and Ratanakkiri provinces are part of the Cambodia-Laos-Vietnam (CLV) programme, pushing for greater ease of travel for tourist between the countries.
Om Pharin, Vice President of the Cambodia Association of Travel Agents (CATA), said he welcomed the move, saying his organisation, which includes 166 travel agencies, is interested in promoting package tour sales for travellers to Laos.
“We have waited many years for this kind of opportunity, and now we have the infrastructure to support it,” Pharin said.
