New guidelines and standards on carbon emissions for the airline and hotel industries have been welcomed by industry members.
IATA said the aviation industry had reached a “major milestone” when the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) announced it will define a new CO2 standard for new aircraft. The new common metric is set to be implemented by the end of 2013 in order to help drive down aviation’s 2% chunk of global man-made carbon emissions.
Meanwhile, 23 hotel chains have agreed to adopt new carbon standards set by the World Travel & Tourism Council (WTTC) and International Tourism Partnership (ITP).
The new HCMI 1.0 method will allow hotels to calculate the emissions behind a hotel stay, meeting or event and will see a standard approach across the industry.
“WTTC has long been advocating that industry speaks with ‘one voice’. Through this initiative we have seen major hotel companies come together to agree a means of communicating carbon impacts which ultimately will result in more transparency and clarity for the consumer,” said David Scowsill, president and CEO of WTTC.
