Construction has officially commenced on a new railway station in the northeast Indian state of Manipur, which forms part of a major expansion strategy for the region.
The Economic Times reports that the foundation stone for the new station at Imphal, the capital of Manipur, was laid on Saturday by India’s Railways Minister Suresh Prabhu. The station will cost a total of INR900 million (US$13.5m) and is due to be completed next year.
This project comes as the Indian government pledges to invest INR70 billion in northeastern rail infrastructure in 2017, as part of efforts to improve connectivity in this remote and sometimes restive region.
Another new project, the cross-border rail link from Agartala to Bangladesh, was also launched last week, and a new line from Imphal to Tamenglong is scheduled to be completed in 2020.
