In a move seen as significant because of the growing importance of spas and wellness tourism, the Indian Spa and Wellness Association has been set up in Mumbai. While India already has many trade bodies, the new set up is seen as a much needed one, especially since the problems and issues faced by the nascent spa and wellness sector are different and unique. Also, it is felt that the new spas and wellness centres coming up, there is a need to have some rules and regulations in order to maintain quality services across the sector. Many of the founders of the new association are consultants and involved with several new projects in new and existing hotels or specialist clinics.
At the recent convention of the Federation of Hotels and Restaurants Associations of India, held in Agra, much focus was given to wellness tourism, emphasising that this segment will contribute much to the overall tourism industry. But it is also felt that over a period of time, some classification and quality checks will have to be done in this segment, just as has now been done in Kerala for the many Ayreveda centres that have come up and are attracting many international and domestic tourists.
