The UK’s biggest airport, Heathrow, has completed the most recent stage of its runway refurbishment after the resurfacing was completed this week.
The GBP20 million renovation will now move onto the final stages, which includes installing 130km of cabling and 1,000 new LED lights.
Due to the high level of operation at Heathrow, which is currently operating at over 98% capacity, the work can only be completed during certain parts of the night and only ever on one runway at a time.
Andrew Mitchell, senior project manager said: “During the July heat wave, we had to reorganise our schedule as it was too hot for the asphalt to be laid, but with careful contingency planning and well co-ordinated teamwork the pace of the project hasn’t been affected.
“We’ve successfully laid and grooved the new surface and now we’re cracking on with laying the thousands of metres of new cable and connecting hundreds of lights.”
