Nine people have been killed after a fire broke out in a bar in Taiwan. The BBC reported officials as saying that the blaze was caused by a discharge of sparks from a stage show at the Ala bar in Taichung, central Taiwan. While the fire was reported to have been put out quickly, several people were trapped on the upper floor of the bar. A further 11 people were injured. The incident echoes that of the deadly fire at Bangkok’s Santika nightclub on New Year’s Eve 2008, when fireworks from a stage show sparked a blaze that killed more than 60 revellers.
