Authorities in North Korea have decided to ban the use of Wi-Fi for all foreigners, including embassy staff.
China’s Xinhua news agency reports that the move will be implemented this week, and those who fail to comply Thursday face large fines.
Last week, nearly all foreign embassies, international organisations and other overseas workers in North Korea received notification from the government that all Wi-Fi installations must be dismantled before 11 September 2014. No explanation was given for the decision.
It is unclear how the ruling will impact the small number of international tourists to North Korea. At present, short-term visitors are permitted to surf the internet on their mobiles via the North Korean service provider, Koryolink.
