Recent statistics state that number of Omani tourists arriving in India remains unchanged, in spite of rising number of H1N1 flu deaths in the South Asian country, as reported by Times of Oman.
Riyaz Kuttery, general manager, Jet Airways in Oman said there has been no change in the traffic flow from Oman to India. The CEO of Travel Point, Sunil Prabhakar also reiterated the same sentiments saying there has been no decline in tourists to India. “But we always advise tourists to avoid (affected) areas,” he said.
However, reactions have started coming in with the UAE government advising its citizens against travelling to India, due to the H1N1 flu outbreak.
However travel agents state that Omanis are among the high spending tourists to India and average length of their stay there is about one week when on a leisure visit. “While we do not see a significant impact immediately, there could be cancellations if the H1N1 flu outbreak is not brought under control,” mentioned a travel agent.
Between January and November 2014, 75,000 visas were issued by the Indian Embassy in Muscat. In 2014, 7.7 million foreign tourists visited India, an increase of 10.6% over 2013.
