“Delhi has delivered,” is how Commonwealth Games Federation President Michael Fennell summed of the successful hosting of the Commonwealth Games 2010 Delhi, as he and Mr. Suresh Kalmadi, Chairman, Organising Committee, Delhi 2010, applauded all, especially the population of Delhi, for the grand success.
“The Olympic disciplines were conducted extremely well and the athletes, who are the most important people for the Commonwealth Games, are satisfied with the way things have turned out,” Mr. Kalmadi said. “There were apprehensions before the Games began but all aspects surrounding the athletes - the conduct of the event, the overall set-up, the Games Village, the entertainment and food - have been really enjoyed by them and they all return home with a great appreciation of India.”
“It was also a great Games for the Indian contingent, as we have almost doubled our medal tally,” Mr. Kalmadi added.
“Our primary job was to host the Games and that we have done with great success,” he added. “The technical aspects were also handled extremely well and over 75 Games records have been shattered here. We had been asked before if the absence of some athletes would affect the Games and I had always maintained that new stars would be born. We have also discovered some young Indian sporting icons and that makes me very happy.”
Mr. Kalmadi also thanked the CGF for all its help. “We have had Mr. Mike Hooper here from the beginning as CEO and while we have had some tiffs, those things are inevitable when we are organising something of this magnitude. I am really thankful to the CGF for helping us in all departments and now we have a core team of officials who are competent to handle such things.”
Mr. Kalmadi also congratulated and thanked the workforce. “The 4000-strong workforce that has worked tirelessly with help from senior management made this a great success.”
Fennell also applauded all the aspects of the Games in relation to the athletes. “Our provisional understanding is that the athletes are by and large happy with all things. The competitions went well, and it was a comfortable, satisfactory experience. The venues were all of very high standards while some were exceptional. I have the highest praise for the security and while it has been too stringent at times, it is better to err on the side of caution.”
He also had a word of praise for the transport facilities, especially the dedicated Games Lanes. “The lanes worked exceptionally well, thanks to the efforts of the police and transport authorities. I must also pay tribute to the people of Delhi, who responded fully and adhered to the restrictions, on many occasions at the cost of their own inconvenience.”
“I also applaud the 22000-strong volunteer force. They have been appreciated across the board, as their enthusiasm, dedication and attention to the people has been exceptional,” Mr. Fennell added.
