Airport authorities in Bengaluru have announced plans to reopen the old HAL Bangalore Airport, to cater for rising traffic.
The Economic Times reported RK Tyagi, chairman of the airport’s operator, Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL), as saying that the addition of a second airport would put Bengaluru into the league of the world’s major gateway cities, which tend to have more than one airport.
Speaking at a function organised by Society of Indian Aerospace Technologies (SIATI), Tyagi added that the opening of HAL Airport would benefit the local population.
HAL Airport served as Bengaluru’s only airport for decades, before being replaced in 2008 by the new Bengaluru International Airport. This is now India’s fourth busiest airport handling more than 12 million passengers per year.
