Oman Air has reported that it saw a 31% increase in passengers in 2008.
According to airline statistics, the Muscat-based carrier served 1.98 million passengers last year, compared with 1.51 million in 2007. The carrier said that it has recorded strong growth on regional routes, including triple-digit percentage increases on routes to Jeddah and Riyadh. Amman, Beirut, Dubai and Kuwait have also seen strong growth, and Oman Air said it is planning extra services to cater to the growing demand.
“Strong growth from within the Middle East continues for corporate travel and we have also attracted a growing number of leisure travellers,” said the carrier’s Vice President – Commercial, Barry Brown.
Brown added that the airline is preparing for continued capacity growth, with services to London Heathrow and Bangkok being upgraded to an Airbus A330 from 1 and 17 May respectively. Oman Air will also take the delivery of four more A330s later in the year.
Brown added however, that while the signs were positive, Oman Air was still gearing up for a tough year. “These are definitely challenging times and while passenger volumes are encouraging our yields remain under pressure and at the end of the day that’s what really counts,” he said.
