Low fares airline Jetstar today celebrates over one million passengers - equivalent to one in four Kiwis - choosing to fly Jetstar’s New Zealand domestic services since its launch in June 2009.
To celebrate, Jetstar is saying ‘Thanks a Million, New Zealand’ with one-way JetSaver Light fares across the New Zealand domestic network from NZD $19.
The sale is on now until midnight Friday 9 April 2010 and is valid for travel between 12 October 2010 and 15 December 2010. For more information visit Jetstar.com.
The lucky one millionth Kiwi passenger, booked to travel today, will also receive a family holiday of their choice to any New Zealand destination.
Jetstar Chief Executive Officer Bruce Buchanan said it was a huge success for the airline to reach such a significant milestone so quickly, and highlighted Jetstar’s ongoing success in the competitive New Zealand market.
“One million passengers have flown with Jetstar across our New Zealand routes between Auckland, Christchurch, Wellington and Queenstown. That’s equivalent to one Kiwi in four choosing to fly with Jetstar in just 10 months of operation,” Mr Buchanan said.
“When we launched Jetstar in New Zealand nearly five years ago with Trans Tasman services from Christchurch, and then almost a year ago with domestic flights, we promised Kiwis real choice.
“We seek to offer consumers not just a choice in carrier, but a new way of flying. This includes paying only for product and services they wish to use, and having a choice of low fares to some of the region’s most popular destinations here and overseas.
“That so many New Zealanders have already flown Jetstar on our domestic network reinforces how important having that choice is to Kiwis.”
Jetstar, which started operating its domestic services on 10 June 2009, is now the second largest airline in New Zealand, operating up to 84 weekly return services between Auckland, Christchurch, Wellington and Queenstown with a fleet of six A320 aircraft.
Mr Buchanan says Jetstar’s commitment to every day low fares has also been successful in making travel throughout New Zealand more accessible and affordable for more Kiwis.
“Of our one million Jetstar domestic passengers, around 900,000 Kiwis have been able to get to their destination for under NZD $100, while more than a third has flown for under NZD $50 and nearly 15 per cent for under NZD $30.
“By making flying a more affordable choice for Kiwis, we’re also extremely proud to have made a very positive contribution to the New Zealand tourism sector and the wider economy.”
The airline has made a significant impact on New Zealand passenger numbers and continues to work closely with airports to provide a seamless passenger service.
Christchurch Airport Chief Executive Officer Jim Boult said: “Over half of all Jetstar’s million domestic passengers pass through Christchurch and numbers are growing. This is a remarkable result given they have been offering domestic services for only 10 months”.
Auckland Airport Chief Executive Officer Simon Moutter said: “Jetstar’s introduction to New Zealand has helped redefine the domestic airline market - stimulating air travel and providing travellers with new choices.”
Mr Buchanan said in March 2010 total domestic passenger numbers at Auckland Airport rose 10.8 percent compared to the previous year which the airport has attributed to the arrival of Jetstar.
To everyone that has already made the choice to fly Jetstar, we’d like to say: ‘Thanks a million New Zealand!’
