Approached five years ago to replace Kurt Wachtveitl as Mandarin Oriental Bangkok’s General Manager, Jan Goessing compared it to “winning the lottery” even though the exact transition date was entirely up to his predecessor.
51-year-old ‘Khun Jan’ first submitted an application to the Bangkok hotel 25 years ago. He was turned down in a letter signed by Kurt, citing potential work permit difficulties.
“I still keep the letter and now it’s placed next to the photo showing Khun Kurt welcoming me to this hotel,” he told The Nation. “It’s been my career objective to work in one of the best hotels of the world and one of the best hotel companies in the world,” he added.
