Panasonic unveils largest economy seatback screen
Panasonic has created what it claims is the largest ever economy class seat-back in-flight entertainment screen.
Unveiled this week at the Aircraft Interiors Expo in Germany, the new monitor measures 14 inches (35.5cm) from corner to corner, and can be integrated into the Quantum Seat, designed by Encore Aerospace.
The electrical manufacturer’s aviation unit, Panasonic Avionics Corporation, said the ambition of ‘Project Fusion’ was “to deliver a solution that featured the largest monitor ever to debut in economy class”. To achieve this, it created a thinner screen design and worked with the seat manufacturer to create a new concept for downward collapsible arm rests that helps accommodate the larger screen.
“Since the debut of Project Fusion in 2009, we have engaged in dozens of integrated seat programmes with our latest generation IFEC (in-flight entertainment and connectivity) solutions. Working with Encore Aerospace, we were able to apply the experience we’ve gained and create a solution that delivers an even more incredible entertainment experience while actually increasing passenger comfort,” said Paul Margis, president & chief executive officer of Panasonic Avionics.
As well as containing the world’s biggest in-flight entertainment screen Quantum economy class seat has designed to weigh less, thus reducing fuel burn, and to maximise space for passengers. The thin seat design includes a carbon fibre seatback and a retractable arm. It is also designed to accommodate Panasonic’s standard nine-inch seatback screens, as well as the larger 14-inch version.
Panasonic currently provides in-flight entertainment systems on more than 3,700 aircraft.
