Passenger jet crashes in New York

The incident occurred shortly after the plane, an AirbusA320, took off from LaGuardia Airport, en route to Charlotte, North Carolina.It was reportedly struck by a flock of birds, causing both engines to fail.
The pilot has been praised for managing to land the planesmoothly in the river, from where all passengers and crew were able to escapeonto life rafts and passing passenger ferries.
New York’s Mayor, Michael Bloomberg, told CNN; “It would appear that thepilot did a masterful job of landing the plane in the river and then makingsure that everybody got out.”
He added that he did not believe there were any serious injures.
