More than 200 passengers were rescued from an Indonesian ferry yesterday, after it caught fire off the coast of Jakarta, Channel NewsAsia reported Indonesia’s Transport Ministry as saying. The ferry, which was travelling to Batam, off the northern coast of Sumatra, was 26km north of Jakarta when the blaze broke in the early hours of Tuesday morning. The fire raged for approximately an hour and a half and all 226 passengers were rescued. While the cause of the fire is still being investigated, passengers reported hearing a loud explosion prior to the blaze.
The incident comes less than two weeks after 27 people were killed when a fire broke out on a Java-Sumatra ferry.
