Conservationists have attacked a plan to set up a tiger park on the resort island of Penang, the BBC reported. Wildlife groups, Malaysian Conservation Alliance for Tigers and WWF Malaysia, have said that the 40-hectare tourist attractions park would go against the government’s pledge to double the population of wild tigers.
“Wild tigers cannot be removed from their natural habitat as they are protected under the Protection of Wild Life Act,” WWF Malaysia’s CEO, Dr Dionysius Sharma, was reported saying.
Meanwhile Penang’s Chief Minister, Lim Guan Eng, said the island needs a new eco-tourism project to attract more visitors but pledged to consider all views before making a final decision.
