The Philippines will engage Japan and Taiwan in air service talks under the Civil Aeronautics Board’s (CAB) ‘pocket open skies’ plan. The policy eases restrictions on foreign carriers serving international airports outside of Manila. Papua New Guinea (PNG) signed an agreement last week, extending its weekly seat entitlement from 150 to 600 on Manila services and permission for 1,500 seat a week to other airports in the Philippines. Vietnam is next in line for talks in September and Carmelo L. Arcilla, CAB Executive Director, told Business World Online that talks with Japan and Taiwan could happen before the year-end. Sri Lanka and Malaysia have also signed deals with the CAB and a second round of talks are due with Indonesia.
