The 2016 Phocuswright Conference opened in Los Angeles running from November 14 to 17 with more than 1,800 people expected to attend. During the four days, the city becomes the epicenter of travel technology. The conference features dozens of travel technology startups pitching new ideas of what could become the most talked about travel apps and software heading into 2017. More than half of the speakers are CEOs or managing directors of travel, hospitality or technology companies.
The conference featured names like Expedia CEO Dara Khosrowshahi, TripAdvisor CEO Stephen Kaufer and Travelocity founder Terrell Jones. But at the center came the broadened Phocuswright Innovation Platform.
Central to the event is the Phocuswright Innovation Platform (sponsored by Brand USA) which hands over the stage to start up travel and technology companies, giving them a chance to talk about their products in a forum to potential clients and investors. This year the number of competitions is increasing from 42 to 62. The company that is chosen Innovator of the Year will go home with a $100,000 convertible bridge loan from the venture capital firm General Catalyst.
The Innovation Platform is comprised of three categories: Battleground, Summit, Launch.
Phocuswright, along with partner and agent consortium Virtuoso, will choose from among the competitor pool for its 2017 Incubator Program.
