Greek port Piraeus is to receive £175 million funding to expand its port facilities.
Investment at the port, which is Greece’s largest, will include new berths for larger cruise ships
In a statement released last week, Yiorgos Anomeritis , CEO of the state-owned Piraeus Port Authority said that the ultimate goal is to turn Piraeus into “the largest port in the Mediterranean, bringing traffic and create new jobs throughout the year”.
Aiming to use Piraeus as a hub, Anomeritis added it would benefit all of Greece’s cruise ports. The statement confirmed that the Athens port would receive £148 million from the European Union’s regional development aid programme and the balance funded by the Greek government. Construction is expected to commence in early 2013.
