Tourists from across China are flocking into Beijing, attracted by the new look of the capital in the wake of last summer’s Olympic Games. According to a Xinhua report, about 85.4 million tourists visited Beijing in the first half of this year, an increase of 20.8% over the same period last year. Those tourists generated CNY127.1 billion (US$18.6 billion) in revenue for the city, up 14.6%, according to statistics released by the city’s tourism authority. The strong growth was in a large part due to a resurgent domestic tourism market, with mainland visitors comprising 83.6 million of the total.”Most tourists came to feel the changes in Beijing after the Olympic Games. It is the new Beijing they are curious about,” Zhang Lingjie, Deputy Manager of China International Travel Service was reported saying. On the downside, only about 1.8 million tourists from outside the mainland visited Beijing in the first six months of the year, representing “an obvious slump from the previous years” according to Lingjie.
