The electric grid for Kolkata collapsed on Sunday, plunging the city into darkness. The Times of India reported that the unprecedented crisis blacked out over 2 million homes in the city. Hospitals were in darkness for at least an hour, and water supply was cut off all evening. There were long queues at the airport as X-ray machines and conveyer belts did not work. About 200 passengers were stuck in an Air India plane bound for Delhi as the aerobridge lost power.
Protests erupted across the city, leading to huge traffic jams. The failure has prompted a police probe, the report said.
