Qantas Airways has cancelled or delayed orders for 30 of Boeing’s 787 Dreamliner planes amid slumping international travel demand, Bloomberg has reported. The Australian carrier will cancel orders for 15 B787-9 aircraft scheduled for delivery by 2015 and will delay delivery of 15 B787-8s by four years, the airline said in a statement today, which claimed that the changes were not influenced by Boeing’s announcement this week of further delays to the Dreamliner programme. The changes to the Boeing order follow Qantas’ decision in April to defer the delivery of four Airbus A380s.
“Delaying delivery, and reducing overall B787 capacity, is prudent,” Qantas’ CEO, Alan Joyce said in the statement. “Qantas announced its original B787 order in December 2005, and the operating environment for the world’s airlines has clearly changed dramatically since then.”
Qantas will jointly remain the biggest customer of the B787 with firm orders for 50 aircraft. The first 15 planes, destined for its low-cost subsidiary, Jetstar, will be delivered from mid-2013, about 3 years later than planned.
