Qantas confirms executive job cuts

The newly announced measures comeon top of the 1,500 job cuts announced last year, and are a further sign of theperilous state of the global aviation industry.
Qantas’ recently-appointed Chief Executive Officer, AlanJoyce, was reported saying; “Our response must begin with those of us who leadthe company. Unfortunately, introducing a flatter, leaner structure meansmaking some tough decisions.
“It is clear that the aviation sector faces considerablecommercial challenges for the foreseeable future,” he added.
Earlier this week the International Air TransportAssociation (IATA) revised its 2009 forecast for the aviation industry,predicting that it would lose US$4.7 billion this year – 88% more than itDecember forecast. Asia Pacific’s carriers were predicted to be the worst-hitof all regions, predicted to register losses of US$1.7 billion this year.
