Qantas’ domestic network has been sent into temporary disarray after engineers in Australia called off a strike hours after the airline implemented its contingency plans. Engineers were due to take industrial action against the carrier from 8-9am AEST tomorrow (11pm-12am GMT) in a row over pay and conditions. Qantas was forced to cancel 31 flights and delay a further 46. It has now reinstated the cancelled flights but said major damage had already been done. “The union is playing games with the Australian travelling public and has already thrown the travel plans of thousands of passengers into disarray,” said Lyell Strambi, group executive operations at Qantas. “This is a union tactic to maximise the disruptions to passengers and the company but costs the union members nothing.”
