Qantas-Emirates partnership extends to NZ
Qantas and Emirates will now be able to include trans-Tasman flights in their global partnership, after New Zealand’s government agreed to approve the joint venture.
The country’s Ministry of Transport has authorised the partnership for an initial period of five years, meaning that Qantas’ New Zealand flights can now be operated under the same joint venture agreement as its other domestic and international routes. This includes enabling Emirates and Qantas to codeshare on trans-Tasman services and offering joint frequent flyer benefits and lounge access to passengers of both airlines.
“This decision means that New Zealand consumers can tap into the lounges, frequent flyer benefits and destinations available under the joint Qantas and Emirates network,” said Qantas’ Group CEO, Alan Joyce. “The partnership also opens the door to increased tourism opportunities for New Zealand, by making it easier for travellers across both Qantas and Emirates’ network to connect more seamlessly across the Tasman.”
Emirates’ President Tim Clark, agreed that the deal would provide a boost to New Zealand travellers. “This is a truly game-changing partnership,” Clark said. “Our two airlines will connect New Zealand to Europe, the UK and Northern Africa more smoothly than ever before.”
Qantas and Emirates operate a total of 129 flights per week between Australia and New Zealand on a mix of Boeing 737, B777 and Airbus A380 aircraft.
The Qantas-Emirates partnership, which commenced in April 2013, has seen the Australian carrier re-route services through Dubai, from where passengers are able to connect to 65 destinations in Europe, North Africa and the Middle East.
