An Australian pilots’ union is threatening to take industrial action which could cause disruptions to long-haul Qantas flights. Following a ballot, an overwhelming 94% of members of the 1,429 members of the Australian & International Pilots Association (AIPA) voted in favour of industrial action – its first in 45 years. It is reported to be at odds with the carrier over salaries, and is also concerned over Qantas plans to bring in pilots from abroad.
In a statement released yesterday, Qantas called the union’s demands “excessive and unsustainable”. It also said that the request for Jetstar pilots to be paid the same as their Qantas colleagues would be impossible.
“Paying Qantas pilot rates to pilots for our low cost carrier Jetstar would drive up ticket prices, make Jetstar unprofitable and set precedents for other staff salaries,” the statement said.
