Qantas’ long-haul pilots will take industrial action this Friday. The airline said has been informed by the Australian & International Pilots Association (AIPA) of the intention to create service disruptions, including making union announcements to passengers over the in-flight public address system.
Negotiations between the airline and the pilots’ union have stalled recently. The pilots are reported to be concerned over plans to outsource jobs to Asia, while Qantas claims that the union’s pay demands are unattainable, and would drive up airfares. The union is trying to achieve salary parity between Jetstar and Qantas pilots – a move Qantas believes will make Jetstar’s low-cost services unprofitable.
In a statement released today, Qantas said it is “assessing the implications” of the union’s action, but that it doesn’t expect any flight delays or cancellations.
