LONDON, 18 February 2010: This week, Qantas will support Legacy Australia’s charity mission by transporting a ‘stolen’ cannon back to its rightful home in Tasmania, the Anglesea Barracks in Hobart.
Qantas Regional General Manager United Kingdom and Ireland Ms Judith Crompton said, Qantas is proud to support this activity by transporting the cannon back to Australia.
“The cannon has had an intriguing history, having travelled the world for many years raising money for Legacy Australia,” said Ms Crompton.
“We are pleased to send it home for some worthy restoration before it embarks on its travels again.”
Much like the loved and well travelled garden gnome, the Anglesea Barracks cannon was stolen years ago as part of a novelty charity mission.
It has transferred between many individuals and organisations, who have made donations to Legacy Australia upon ‘theft’ of the cannon, each adding their name to the plaques adorning the cannon.
After arriving in London on HMAS Sydney most recently, two Yeoman Warders from the Tower of London came into possession of the cannon and Qantas has provided tickets for them to accompany it on its return to Hobart.
The cannon will depart London Heathrow this Sunday, 21 February, before touching down in Hobart on Tuesday, 23 February.
In conjunction with the Australian High Commission, Qantas is pleased to support our Defence Forces, both in the United Kingdom and Australia, by transporting the cannon on its journey from London to Hobart.
