Qantas will use larger aircraft, consolidate services and deploy management staff to act in operational roles to minimise disruptions during next week’s strike action ground staff. An estimated 3,800 members of Transport Workers’ Union (TWU), including baggage handlers, ground staff, catering, freight and other transport employees, will down tools for four hours on 20 September at airports across Australia.
Qantas Group Executive, Olivia Wirth said the airline was focussed on keeping passengers moving during the industrial action.
“The TWU is intent on causing disruptions to Qantas passengers and we are doing everything we possibly can to reduce the delays and cancellations,” Ms Wirth said. “Qantas will publish an updated schedule in the coming days and contact any passenger who has been affected by the strike to make alternative travel arrangements.”
Qantas said that the strike was part of a coordinated three-pronged attack on the airline by the TWU, pilots’ union and engineers’ union.
“We encourage the TWU to remain at the negotiating table instead of going on strike,” Ms Wirth added.
