PERTH, 10 DECEMBER 2009: Qantas today unveiled a new security screening facility at its domestic terminal in Perth, part of the airline’s $75 million terminal upgrade program.
Qantas Regional General Manager for Western Australia, Mr Ian Gay, said the new facility would reduce congestion and waiting times around the screening point, and deliver greater speed and ease for customers at the airport.
“Qantas has significantly expanded services in Western Australia over the last 12 months, largely to meet demand for additional capacity from the mining and energy sectors,” Mr Gay said.
“This rapid growth has prompted a significant investment in the Perth terminal in order to deliver a faster, smoother and more seamless airport experience for our customers.
“The security screening facility has been re-located and enlarged to provide extra capacity and reduce waiting times.”
Key terminal improvements already completed include:
– three additional baggage carousels;
– six new check-in counters;
– a larger aerobridge able to accommodate wide-body A330 aircraft operating east-west services; and
– the upgrade of a gate from B737 to B767 capability.
“Along with our major terminal upgrade, Qantas customers in Perth will enjoy the very best airport experience in Australia when Airport of the Future is rolled-out next year,” Mr Gay said. “In mid-2010, Perth will be the first to trial Qantas’ next generation check-in.
“Qantas Frequent Flyers from Silver through to Platinum, and all Qantas Club members, will have their member card embedded with an intelligent chip that will transform the card into a personal boarding pass linked to a permanent bag tag, halving check in time and reducing queues.
“Check-in facilities will also be upgraded for Bronze Frequent Flyers and non-frequent flyers.”
Further improvements will continue in the New Year, when work commences on upgrading the Perth Qantas Club. Beyond Perth, next year the regional West Australian airports of Broome, Kalgoorlie, Karratha, Port Hedland, Newman and Paraburdoo will see technology upgrades including automated gate boarding facilities.
