Just 27% of business travellers are fully reimbursed for their trips taken, according to new Mintel research.
The survey of business travellers found 22% would work longer hours while on a business trip and only 19% are reimbursed for time spent travelling outside normal hours.
That said, only 14% said they would be unhappy if they were made to take more trips and 8% said it affected their relationships at home.
“While respondents may have different views over what ‘fully reimbursed’ constitutes, it is a fair assumption that the majority of business travellers feel out of pocket at the end of a business trip,” said Mintel’s travel and tourism analyst Harry Segal. “With a sizable proportion of business travellers claiming that they work longer hours and that business trips are putting a strain on their relationships, companies looking to get the best out of employees in the time they are away should perhaps take note of where negative implications are occurring.”
Around 16% of business travellers said their company is stricter on enforcing travel policies while only 6% said companies were happy to pay extra for a premium service.
Although the trend for mixing business trips with leisure continues to be a trend, around 30% admit business trips were a welcome break from everyday worklife, dropping to 26% for parents.
“These findings suggest that there is scope for brands to better incentivise business travellers to demand an ad-hoc change of policy from their employers,” added Segal.
