Cyprus’ capital city Nicosia is to be regenerated in a multi-million euro project with help from British architect Zaha Hadid.
The city, which is locally known as Lefkosia and dates back to the 16th century, is to be transformed in the next two years under the project to preserve its history.
A new landmark is to be created between Eleftheria Square (Freedom Square) & Solomou Square by Zaha Hadid Architects which under the name Urban Recreational Park will include an open-air theatre, children’s playground, cycle route and F&B outlets.
The local bus network will also improve with 14 new routes and a new Town Hall is being developed within eight historical buildings. In addition house facades in the Kaimalki area are to be restored and the Taht-El-Kale area will be redesigned.
Hadid was the architect behind the London Aquatics Centre used during the 2012 Olympic Games.
