The annual ranking of top cities for association meetings features some rising Asian stars even as Singapore continued to lead the pack.
The listing by ICCA (International Congress & Convention Association) covered over 6,500 events which took place in 2007.
Vienna topped the charts again as the most popular city overall, hosting 153 association meetings. Berlin climbed the rankings to number two, hosting 123 such meetings. Singapore came in third on the overall city ranking but maintained its lead as the top Asian city, hosting 120 events.
A surprise newcomer on the Asian circuit is Beijing, no doubt the beneficiary of the hype and anticipation over the Olympics which it is hosting this year. It climbed from 13th place in 2006 to eighth last year, having hosted 87 association meetings. It is likely to maintain its climb, riding on the post-Olympics momentum.
Hong Kong came in joint 12th with Prague, hosting 72. Both Seoul and rising Bangkok came in next at 70 events. Taipei made a remarkable leap, from 40th position in 2006, to 18th position with 67 association meetings. Also making it into the Top 20 is Kuala Lumpur at 19th position.
