Ritz-Carlton will return to Australia in 2018, following a 15-year absence.
The luxury hotel group, which forms part of Marriott International, has penned an agreement with the Far East Consortium for the development of the brand new Ritz-Carlton Perth, in the new Elizabeth Quay area of the city.
Herve Humler, Ritz-Carlton’s president & chief operations officer, said the company was “delighted to make our return to Australia”.
“We have listened to our guests who have a strong desire to stay with us when the travel to this beautiful destination in Western Australia. We have great partners in Far East Consortium and look forward to opening this incredible hotel in 2018,” he commented.
The new 204-room Ritz-Carlton Perth will be developed on the banks of the Swan River in Elizabeth Quay, which forms the centrepiece of Perth’s urban redevelopment plan. Work on the new hotel is expected to commence in 2015, and once complete the project will also include ground floor retail space, waterfront dining and a series of luxury apartments.
“Far East Consortium is privileged to have been selected as the developer of this project by the Western Australian government which will bring the river to the city. We look forward to creating a set of landmark buildings on the Perth waterfront which will herald Perth’s arrival as a world class city in Australasia,” said Far East Consortium’s chairman, David Chiu.
“Ritz-Carlton is a renowned international luxury hotel operator renowned for its service. The development of the Ritz-Carlton Perth is a key part of the Elizabeth Quay project and will further strengthen that reputation. I expect it to quickly become an iconic part of Western Australia’s tourism landscape,” he added.
Ritz-Carlton has a rich history in Australia. Its former property in Sydney’s Double Bay area was favourite haunt of celebrities, with guests including Lady Diana, Elton John, Madonna and Bill Clinton. It also gained notoriety as the hotel where INXS singer Michael Hutchence was found dead in 1997.
Ritz-Carlton currently operates more than 20 hotels across the Asia Pacific region, but none in Oceania.
