Assistant Tourism, Culture and Environment Minister Karim Bujang said there were plenty of opportunities to turn such villages into a lucrative money-spinner for the tourism industry.
“However, resident and tour operators must work together to clean up and improve these villages to attract tourists,” The Star reported him as saying.
Kari said some resorts that were built using the water village concept had been successful, especially in Sabah’s east coast.
He said tour operators could also promote such a concept together with the local residents by funding the upgrade of the houses and providing other amenities.
“I think the time has come for us to change these eyesores into a tourism attraction,” he was quoted saying.
