Air India has been ordered to take back an air hostess who was sacked for being overweight. National press reports that the Kolkata High Court told the airline that the grounds for her sacking were unreasonable and that it should set up a medical board to assess her condition and then to assign her ground duties accordingly within the next two months. Nipa Dhar, now aged 44-years-old, was fired back in 2001 without a medical assessment or the chance of moving departments. According to her lawyers, Ms Dipa’s weight issues were caused by medication she had been prescribed to cope with altitude phobia. Following the High Court Decision, the airline must not only re-employer her, but also reimburse her for all her dues outstanding since her sacking in 2001.
