Samui marine life to be protected
The tourist islands of Koh Samui and Koh Phangan in the Gulf of Thailand are to be declared environmental protection zones to safeguard the marine ecology the Bangkok Post has reported the head of Thailand’s Office of Natural Resources and Environmental Policy and Planning (OMEP) as saying yesterday. Some of the 36 other small islands nearby would also be protected under the scheme.
Under the new scheme, any construction or development projects that pose a threat to the marine ecology will be banned. Authorities will also control the height of buildings, and some projects will be required to conduct the environmental impact assessments.
