SAS has launched a series of environmental and customer initiatives both in the air and on the ground. The Scandinavian carrier’s new self-service flow was recently introduced at Stockholm’s Arlanda Airport and is said to move passengers through security faster with the swipe of a barcode for an automated document check. This is available on boarding passes or through EuroBonus loyalty cards. Automated baggage drop will also be implemented at the airport’s domestic terminal to recognise and adjust baggage allowance for customers with different tickets. Furthermore, the airline has been granted permission to use ‘curved approaches’ with the SAS Boeing 737NG. In practice, this system uses GPS instead of traditional methods to approach the runway in a S-shaped curve. This reduces noise exposure in areas around the airport. “We are proud to be leading the way in using advanced system support to make our flights more efficient,” said SAS Environmental Director Lars Andersen Resare. “The technology behind curved approaches provides us with the opportunity to further streamline our green approaches and to make even greater emission reductions,” he added.
