Seoul has launched a new movie that aims to show a different side of the Korean capital.
Following a major crowd-sourcing project that collected a selection of five-minute video clips from Seoul residents and visitors, the Seoul Metropolitan Authority brought in famous Korean movie director Park Chan-wook to turn the clips into a full-length movie called ‘Bitter, Sweet, Seoul’.
Almost 12,000 clips, equalling more than 159 hours of content, were submitted from all over the world. Park, who directed the famous Korean movie ‘Old Boy’, then had the task of trawling through this content and turning it into an arthouse movie that depicts real life in the Korean capital.
“I thought it was a very good opportunity to show how Seoul has different people and different lives. We think that Seoul is just the same Seoul and we all have pretty much same perception of it. However, there are various people with different lives,” said the movie’s co-producer, Park Chan-kyong – brother of Park Chan-wook.
As its title suggests, ‘Bitter, Sweet, Seoul’ is different from many other promotional videos that showcase the positive sides of a city. Instead, it aims to portray the lives of real people in the city.
“The greatest significance of this project is the fact that everyone from all over the world made this movie together. This is what makes this project truly meaningful,” said Seoul’s mayor, Park Won-soon.
“We were able to create a special movie that illuminates the undiscovered images of Korea. The honesty and truthfulness of Seoul shown in the movie is what actually distinguishes the city,” he added.
The movie will be available on YouTube, as well as via a special online channel set up by the Seoul Metropolitan Government.
