Authorities in Shanghai have approved plans to expand the city’s cruise terminal.
The Shanghai government has given the green light for the second phase of development, doubling the ship handling capacity of the facility within three years.
Under the plan, a further two 220,000-tonne cruise ship berths will be built at Wusong Port’s International Cruise Terminal, in addition to the current two. This will allow Shanghai to handle the largest cruise ships in the world.
The CNY1.1 billion (US$180 million) project will commence in April 2015 and is expected to be completed in 2018. Shanghai’s cruise terminal is expected to handle more than 3.4 million annual cruise passengers by 2020.
In addition, the city’s government is planning to extend the 72-hour visa waiver policy to cruise passengers. Currently the scheme is only applicable to transit passengers at the city’s airports.
