Authorities in Shanghai are considering the introduction of flexible taxi rates, with higher prices during rush hours and cheaper rates at off-peak times. The Shanghai Daily reported the city’s Transport Bureau as saying that the new scheme may help to relieve traffic congestion.
“We are still trying to find a good balance in the price levy,” Bureau official was quoted saying. “When the occupancy rate drops below 50%, drivers start to suffer substantial income losses.”
Shanghai currently has a fleet of around 50,000 taxis.
