The development of a Maglev rail link between Shanghai and Hangzhou is to be shelved, local media has reported. The China News Services cited Liu Ting, Deputy Director of the Zhejiang Provincial Development & Reform Commission, as saying that the planned CNY35 billion (US$5.3 billion) project would not now go ahead. The two eastern Chinese cities are already connected by a high-speed rail service, which opened last October. The Maglev service however, would have completed the Shanghai-Hangzhou journey in just 38 minutes - 10 minutes faster than the high-speed link.
