Shangri-La will open a huge resort in Sri Lanka this summer, marking the Hong Kong-based hotel group’s debut in the country.
Welcoming its first guests on 1 June 2016, Shangri-La’s Hambantota Resort & Spa will cover 59 hectares of beachfront land on Sri Lanka’s south coast, with facilities including an 18-hole golf course, a traditional artisan village and range of dining, event and leisure facilities.
“Sri Lanka is one of the fastest-growing destinations in the Indian Ocean and a beautiful country with incredible natural attractions, wonderful people and more than 2,000 years of culture. We are delighted to be opening the first international luxury resort in Hambantota and look forward to bringing Shangri-La’s hallmark hospitality from the heart to this exciting destination,” said Shangri-La’s president & CEO, Greg Dogan.
The hotel’s 300 rooms and suites will range from 48 to 240m² and all feature a balcony or terrace. There will also be a large kids’ club including a seven-metre-high trapeze and drone-flying area, plus a spa with 12 treatment rooms and outdoor pavilions, a fitness centre, dive centre, 30-metre lap pool, lagoon-style pool, tennis court and retail outlets.
The resort will also be attached to Shangri-La’s Golf & Country Club, an 18-hole, par-70 golf course that overlooks the Indian Ocean. The resort will be the first in Sri Lanka to have its own golf course.
For the MICE market, a large 2,525m² events space will include outdoor pavilions with a capacity of 1,000 delegates, plus three conference rooms and two smaller function venues.
And the resort’s F&B facilities will include the Bojun Hala international and Sri Lankan restaurant, Sera, which features Southeast Asian hawker-style stalls, the Beach Grill, 19th Hole Bar and a lobby lounge.
Finally, The Village area features traditional huts where the local craftsmen create, exhibit and sell their items, including pottery, ceramics, wood carvings and weavings. At night, this area will transform into an entertainment venue showcasing Sri Lankan music, dance and martial arts performances.
Shangri-La’s Hambantota Resort & Spa is the first of two hotels the company is planning to open in Sri Lanka. The second, Shangri-La Hotel Colombo, is expected to launch in 2017.
