A new Shariah-compliant airline has started operating in Malaysia.
The Bernama news agency reports that Rayani Air, which is based in the state of Kelantan, launched its maiden flight between Kota Bharu and Kuala Lumpur on Sunday.
A full-service airline, Rayani states that it will “focus on service delivery”, with in-flight food, comfortable seats and additional legroom.
But in line with Islamic law, the airline will not serve any alcoholics beverages, all meals will be prepared in accordance with halal standards, and prayers will be recited before each flight.
The chairman of Kelantan’s culture, tourism & heritage committee, Mohd Anizam Abdul Rahman, was quoted saying that he believes a “Shariah-compliant airline would benefit the community in Kelantan and spur the growth of the tourism sector and economy in the state”.
Rayani Air will initially operate a fleet of two Boeing 737-400 aircraft, configured with 12 seats in business class and 120 in economy. The airline is now flying to KL and Langkawi, with services to Kuching and Kota Kinabalu expected to follow.
