Singapore Airlines (SIA) has asked its employees to take unpaid leave for up to two years in a move to reduce costs. The voluntary scheme applies to the carrier’s 14,000 employees, the Straits Times said.
Last month, SIA announced plans to cut its capacity by 11% and has grounded 17 of its 100-plus aircraft. This would see 17 aircraft, out of its total fleet of 101 planes, decommissioned.
SIA had also withdrawn its service to Amritsar in India in February and would pull out of Vancouver from April onwards. Flights to Sydney, Seoul, Tokyo, Beijing, Guangzhou and Nanjing will also be cut back.
SIA has already asked pilots at its cargo arm to volunteer for unpaid leave.
The carrier said last month its quarterly profit fell 43% due to hedging losses and slowing demand for travel and cargo.
