The expansion of Bangkok’s Suvarnabhumi Airport will be completed in single undertaking, rather than being split into several phases, the Bangkok Post reported Airports of Thailand Plc (AoT) as saying.
The project includes the construction of a third runway and a mid-field terminal that will increase annual passenger handling capacity to 60 million passengers - a 33% increase.
“The second-phase development will proceed as a package and not in pieces,” AoT Acting President, Serirat Prasutanond, was quoted saying in response to the suggestion of dividing the project into several phases could be more cost-effective. The project is expected to cost THB78 billion (US$2.2 billion).
Serirat reiterated the need for the expansion to proceed without delay to cope with the future increase in traffic demand. The airport is currently operating close to capacity, the report stated. The expanded capacity should be able to cope with demand until 2018, Serirat added.
The expansion plan was approved in December by Thailand’s National Economic and Social Development Board.
